Как клич вождя перед боем, или его речь на тинге,
Like a cry of a leader before the battle, or his speech at the ting,
И каждый лик из моей памяти глядит сурово.
And every face from my memory looks sternly.
Я видел сосны могучие - они вздымались над головою,
I saw mighty pines - they rose above the head,
Устремляясь в небо вершинами седыми,
Rushing into the sky with gray -haired ones,
Я слышал, как выли волки у меня за спиною,
I heard the wolves howled behind me
Будто сверху смотрели на меня очами стальными.
As if they looked at me with the eyes of steel.


Я видел битвы - как кровь проливалась на землю,
I saw the battle - how blood spilled to the ground,
Как за свою свободу воины жизнь не щадили,
How did the warriors do not spare life for their freedom,
Как гнали ворога, что простым словам не внемлил,
How they drove the vow, which did not heed in simple words,
Как павших братьев в пламени языках хоронили.
As fallen brothers in the flame, languages were buried.
Я видел лики богов - таких родных и в то же время грозных,
I saw the faces of the gods - such relatives and at the same time formidable,
Их не забыли, пусть живьём выжгли память о предках,
They were not forgotten, let them burn the memory of the ancestors alive,
Окрепли дети, веру хранящие в ночах морозных,
They got into children who store faiths at night,
И напоили сталь в руках замёрзших, но крепких.
And they drove steel in the hands of frozen, but strong.


Я в городах видел новые храмы - их из праха подняли к небу,
I saw new temples in the cities - they were raised from dust to the sky,
От лжи очистив природную правду,
Cleaning the natural truth from lies,
И эта правда вела людей к счастью и свету,
And this truth led people to happiness and light,
И в их глазах я видел тысячи деяний славных.
And in their eyes I saw thousands of deeds of the glorious.
Я видел полёт их мыслей в своей голове как будто,
I saw the flight of their thoughts in my head as if
Как каждый новый день давал им для действия сил.
How every new day gave them for the action of forces.
Все это пронеслось во сне предо мной за минуты,
All this flashed in a dream before me in minutes,
И лишь одного из того сна я до сих пор не забыл -
And I still have not forgotten one of that sleep -


Они глядели в небо - звездами их боги начертали руны,
They looked into the sky - the stars of their gods drew the runes,
Но за череду веков я не увидел в том небе луны,
But for a series of centuries, I did not see the moon in that sky,
Два солнца их по утрам сияли ярким изумрудом,
Their two suns in the morning shone with a bright emerald,
А наше светило и Земля оттуда не видны.
And our luminary and the earth is not visible from there.
