In Indian legends and myths, Mrityunjaya is associated with the name of Markandeya - his teachings are laid down in the Markandeya Purana. Legend says that Markandeya was destined to die when he reached the age of 16, but with his sincere appeal to Shiva, with the help of this mantra, he defeated Yama - the God of death. However, this story began even before his birth...

Living in the forest, Saint Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati had no children; they performed long asceticism in the hope of gaining virtue and having a child. They were rewarded with the sight of Lord Shiva - Lord Shiva, having listened to their request, offered them a choice: to become the parents of a child who will become outstanding - a spiritual light - but his life will end at 16 years old, or a child with a long life, but stupid and selfish. They chose a child with spiritual merit, and in due course Marudvati gave birth to a boy, who was named Markandeya. His parents decided not to tell him about his life expectancy, but, approaching 16 years, his parents’ sadness grew more and more. When the boy asked to explain the reason for their sadness, they could not resist and told what Lord Shiva had told them. Having already achieved perfection in yoga, Markandeya decided to devote himself to his practice. On his sixteenth birthday, Markandeya went to the temple to worship the symbol of divine consciousness - the Shiva Linga. When the messengers of Lord Yama, the god of death, came to take him away, they found him so engrossed in prayers that they did not dare complete their mission. Returning to Yama, they explained their dilemma. Then Yama himself went to the temple to complete what he started, he convinced Markandeya to follow the natural law of life and death and go willingly, but Markandeya, seeking protection, wrapped his arms around the Shiva Linga. Yama threw his noose to catch Markandeya, but the noose wrapped around the linga, and immediately Shiva, who lived there, split the linga in two and appeared enraged. Yama threw his noose too far; he did not have the authority to catch Shiva himself. Shiva killed Yama with a kick. The other gods looked on in confusion. Fearing that Yama's death would disrupt the order of the universe, the gods begged Shiva to bring Yama back to life, which Shiva eventually did. But he clarified that Markandeya’s devotion became his protection, and therefore he blesses him with eternal youth - Markandeya will forever remain a sixteen-year-old saint...

The soul of Markandeya is still present somewhere in the universe... And the Mantra has become a guide that opens the doors to a great spiritual heritage for those who seek it.
