Nevertheless, the territory of Lapland, or Samiland, the land of the Sami, stretches from the Kola Peninsula to Norway. And the Sami consider themselves the indigenous inhabitants of Northern Europe. The traditions, language and music of the Sami have been almost forgotten since the conquest to this day. But yoiks were passed down from generation to generation and have survived to this day. This is a free, largely improvisational style of singing. As a rule, the singer performs yoika on behalf of someone, it can be a person or an animal. Mari Boine is a Norwegian representative of the Sami. Her family did not speak their native language, and yoiks were generally prohibited, just like in other Sami families. The only music allowed was psalms. Mari lived in a very religious family. She recalls that in her youth she was very embarrassed about her origin and dreamed of being Norwegian or European. But I didn’t even think about making music. She worked as a school teacher. And yet she began to sing, while considering herself crazy because folk music beckoned and attracted her. It was thanks to music that she learned about her people, parted with her complexes, learned her native language and fell in love with the Sami culture. Nowadays, the rights of the Sami are enshrined in the Norwegian constitution, and the Sami’s native language can be studied at school. At first, when Mari just started performing, she met with the disapproval of her relatives.
