During the assault on Singapore, the Japanese 25th Army, inferior to the enemy in numbers and began to experience an acute flaw in ammunition and food, carried out suicidal attacks in order to break the enemy’s fighting spirit and accelerate its surrender, and suffered heavy losses. In this regard, it was decided not to conduct a traditional parade on the occasion of the capture of the fortress, but to arrange a ceremony of mass funeral of selflessly dead comrades. Thousands of soldiers had to carry homemade boxes on their shoulders with their brothers wrapped in white linen. For this ceremony, a song was written with the words of a non-commissioned officer of the financial service of the Guards Division of the Minor Tatsuhara and the music of the foreman of the Kozo Matsui naval orchestra.

During the war years by recording firms, four options for a song with two melody options (more sad) were recorded, with the course of the course of the war, a more sad option began to gain increasing popularity.
