In Tibet, Karmapa is known as the "King of Yogis". The Gyalwa Karmapa is the first consciously reborn Lama of Tibet and the head of the Karma Kagyu school. For the benefit of all beings and to help his disciples, he incarnates in this world over and over again. After several incarnations as a tantric yogi in India, he was already reborn seventeen times in Tibet. The Karmapas embody the activity of all Buddhas, and manifest exactly those aspects of it that are needed at the appropriate time. Their coming was predicted by Buddha Shakyamuni and Guru Rinpoche. The Karmapas, starting from the first, left precise data about their next rebirth. The 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (1924 - 1981) had all the transmission of lineage methods and was the only religious leader who managed to remove all the relics of his Karma Kagyu school from the country during the capture of Tibet by the Chinese. Nothing important was lost. Through the power of his activity and with the help of his disciples, he spread the Teachings of the Buddha to the West. The current lineage holder is the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje. This disc contains rare recordings of Mahakala Puja (a ritual dedicated to the Defender of the Teaching) performed by the 16th Karmapa and his students - lamas and monks of the Karma Kagyu school.
