Трудами ночи изнурен,

И в исступлении рыдал,

И грыз сырую грудь земли,

И слезы, слезы потекли

В нее горючею росой...

То взор кровавый устремлял,
Then the bloody gaze fixed
Мотая ласково хвостом,
Shuffling affectionately tail,
На полный месяц, - и на нем
For the full month - and on it
Шерсть отливалась серебром.
The wool was cast in silver.
Я ждал, схватив рогатый сук,
I waited, grabbing a horned bitch,
Минуту битвы; сердце вдруг
Minute of the battle; The heart is suddenly
Зажглося жаждою борьбы
Light a thirst for struggle
И крови... да, рука судьбы
And blood ... yes, the hand of fate
Меня вела иным путем...
I led me in a different way ...
Но нынче я уверен в том,
But now I'm sure that
Что быть бы мог в краю отцов
What could be in the edge of the fathers
Не из последних удальцов.
Not from the last daredevils.

Я ждал. И вот в тени ночной
I was waiting. And here in the shadow of the night
Врага почуял он, и вой
He sensed the enemy, and howl
Протяжный, жалобный как стон
Lingering, plaintive as a groan
Раздался вдруг... и начал он
Suddenly came ... and he began
Сердито лапой рыть песок,
Angrily with a paw to dig sand,
Встал на дыбы, потом прилег,
I got on its hind legs, then lay down,
И первый бешеный скачок
And the first frantic leap
Мне страшной смертью грозил...
I threatened me with a terrible death ...
Но я его предупредил.
But I warned him.
Удар мой верен был и скор.
My blow was faithful and Skor.
Надежный сук мой, как топор,
My reliable bitches like an ax,
Широкий лоб его рассек...
His wide forehead cut his way ...
Он застонал, как человек,
He groaned like a man
И опрокинулся. Но вновь,
And overturned. But again,
Хотя лила из раны кровь
Although it is pouring from the wound blood
Густой, широкою волной,
Thick, wide wave,
Бой закипел, смертельный бой!
The fight boiled, deadly battle!

Ко мне он кинулся на грудь:
