Уходит день, и в комнате потёмки,
The day leaves, and in the room of the Potemka,
И в ней ещё не зажжена свеча,
And the candle has not yet been lit in it,
А за столом сидит сам князь Потёмкин,
And at the table, Prince Potemkin himself sits,
От гнева весь багровый, и бурча:
From anger, all crimson, and muttering:


"Проклятый шейх Мансур все мысли спутал;
"The damned sheikh Mansour confused all thoughts;
Он, право, мне - что в горле кость, ей - ей!
He, right, to me - that in the throat of the bone is to her - to her!
Зловещей тенью он меня окутал,
He enveloped me with an ominous shadow,
И изумляет дерзостью своей!"
And amazes with his audacity! "

Oh, la Ilyakh Illa Lla!
Страх клич Мансура вселял!
Fear of Mansura instilled!
Умеет этот шейх Мансур нежданно
Knows this sheikh Mansur unexpectedly
Как призрак появляться, там, где не ждут!
How a ghost to appear, where they are not waiting!


И в тактике искусен, как ни странно,
And in tactics it is skilled, oddly enough,
Но в Петербурге ж это не поймут!
But in St. Petersburg, they won’t understand it!
Как князю этот шейх Мансур мешает;
How this sheikh Mansur interferes with the prince;
Он дни и ночи - в думах про него,
He is days and night - in thought about him,
И много золота князь обещает,
And the prince promises a lot of gold,
Коль сможет кто принесть главу его!
If someone can bring his head!


О, ля иляха илля Ллаъ!
Oh, la Ilyakh Illa Lla!
Страх клич Мансура вселял!
Fear of Mansura instilled!
И в гневе князь Потёмкин набирает
And in anger, Prince Potemkin is gaining
Отряд из славных на всю Русь полков;
A detachment of glorious regiments for all Rus';
Вооружив их щедро, в путь сбирает,
Armed them generously, he takes on the road,
Наставив прежде бравых молодцов:
Establishing before the brave fellows:
"Наказ вам, братцы! Мстящею рукою
"The order for you, brothers!
Аул Мансура сжечь, сравнять с землёй,
Burn the aul of Mansura, equalize with the ground,
И пусть над Сунжей горною рекою
And let the mountain river over Sunzha
Его пожарищ дым всё кроет мглой!"
His conflagration smoke covers everything with a blasphemer! "


О, ля иляха илля Ллаъ!
Oh, la Ilyakh Illa Lla!
Страх клич Мансура вселял!
Fear of Mansura instilled!
И был аул Алды сожжён нещадно:
And the village of Alda was burned mercilessly:
Всех - женщин и детей и стариков, -
All - women and children and the elderly, -
Рубили до едино беспощадно! -
They chopped to one mercilessly! -


Так нам гласит предание веков.
This is how we are legend of centuries.
И жажду крови утолив так мерзко,
And the thirst for blood quenching so vile,
К соседним сёлам двинулись войска,
Troops moved to neighboring villages,
Но тут им в тыл Мансур ударил дерзко,
But then Mansur struck them in the rear, boldly,
И слышалось "Аллах" издалека!
And it was heard "Allah" from afar!


О, ля иляха илля Ллаъ!
Oh, la Ilyakh Illa Lla!
Страх клич Мансура вселял!
Fear of Mansura instilled!
Столь яростной была его атака,
His attack was so fierce,
Что враг где - небо, где - земля не знал!
That the enemy is where - the sky, where - the earth did not know!


Покинула в тот день солдат отвага,
The soldier of courage left that day,
А шейх их прямо в Сунжу всех загнал.
And Sheikh drove them right into the Sunzhu.
И здесь, жалея пуль для отщепенцев,
And here, pitying bullets for renegades,
Забили горцы камнями их рать;
The highlanders scored their army with stones;
И сколь ещё невесть в краю чеченцев
And how much more in the edge of the Chechens
Бесславно русы, будут умирать!?
Ingloriously the Russians, they will die!?


О, ля иляха илля Ллаъ!
Oh, la Ilyakh Illa Lla!
Страх клич Мансура вселял!
