1 And it came to pass after three days, as I sat under an oak, behold, a voice came out of the bush over against me, saying, Ezra, Ezra! 2 And I said, Here am I, Lord! And I stood up upon my feet. 3 Then said he unto me, I revealed myself in the bush, and spake unto Moses, when my people were bondmen in Egypt: 4 And I sent him, and brought my people out of Egypt, and brought them unto mount Sinai, and kept them with me many days: 5 And shewed unto him many wonders, and shewed the secrets of the times, and the end: and I commanded him, saying, 6 These words declare, but the rest hide. 7 And now I say unto thee, 8 The signs which I have shewed thee, and the dreams which thou hast seen, and the interpretations which thou hast heard, lay up in thine heart: 9 For thou shalt be taken from men, and shalt walk with my Son, and with such as thou art, until the times be fulfilled. 10 For the age has lost its youth, and the times approach old age. 11 For the age is divided into twelve parts, and nine parts and half a tenth part are already past, 12 and that which remains after the half a tenth part. 13 Now therefore build up your house, and instruct your people, comfort the lowly, and renounce corruption. 14 And let go of mortal thoughts, cast off the burdens of men, lay aside the infirmities of nature, and lay aside the thoughts that are burdensome to you, and prepare to be removed from these times. 15 For hereafter there will be greater evils than you have seen this day. 16 As the age weakens, so much will the evils of the living increase. 17 Truth will go further away, and a lie will draw near. The vision which you have seen will hasten to come. 18 Then answered I and said, "Behold, I am before you, Lord. 19 I will go as you have commanded me, and I will instruct this people who now exist. But who will instruct those who will then be born? 20 For the world lies in darkness, and they who dwell in it are without light. 21 Because your law is burned up, so that no one knows what you have done or what they should do. 22 But if I have found favor with you, send the Holy Spirit on me, that I may write all that has been done in the world from the beginning, which was written in your law, that men may find the way, and that they who will live in the last times may live." 23 And he answered and said to me, "Go, gather the people together, and tell them not to look for you for forty days." 24 Now make yourself many tablets, and take with you Sariah, Daviri, Salemi, Echan, and Asiel, these five who can write quickly. 25 Then come here, and I will light in your heart the lamp of understanding, which will not go out until you finish what you write. 26 And when you have finished this, some things you shall proclaim, and some you shall deliver secretly to the wise. Tomorrow at this hour you shall begin to write. 27 Then I went as he commanded me, and gathered all the people together and said, 28 Hear, O Israel, these words: 29 Our fathers were strangers in Egypt, and were delivered from thence, 30 and received a law of life, which they did not keep, which you also have transgressed after them. 31 And the land was given you for an inheritance, the land of Zion; but your fathers and you committed iniquity, and kept not the ways which the Most High commanded you. 32 And he, as a righteous judge, has taken away from you this day what he gave you. 33 And now you are here, and your brethren with you. 34 If you rule your sense and discipline your heart, you will preserve life, and in death you will receive mercy. 35 For after death comes judgment, when we live again; and then the names of the righteous will be declared, and the deeds of the wicked will be exposed. 36 Let no one come to me this day or seek me until forty days have passed. 37 So I took the five men, as he commanded me, and we went out into the field and remained there. 38 And behold, the next day a voice called to me, saying, Ezra, open your mouth, and drink of what I shall give you to drink. 39 So I opened my mouth, and behold, a full cup was given to me, filled as it were with water, but its color was like fire. 40 So I took it and drank, and I went to the field and drank. And when I drank, my heart breathed understanding, and wisdom grew within me, for my spirit was strengthened by memory. 41 My mouth was opened and was no longer closed. 42 God gave understanding to five men, and they wrote down by night in order the things that were spoken to them, which they did not know. 43 They ate bread by night; but I spoke by day and did not hold my peace by night. 44 And in forty days ninety-four books were written. 45 And when the forty days were completed, 46 God said, The first which you wrote, lay them open, that both the worthy and the unworthy may read; 47 But the last seventy keep, that you may deliver them to the wise of the people; 48 For in them is the channel of understanding, the fountain of wisdom, and the river of knowledge. And so I did.
