Feanor ordered to stop: his wounds were mortal, and he knew that his hour was near. And, casting his last glance from the slopes of Ered Wethrin, he saw in the distance the peaks of Thangorodrim - the most powerful of the strongholds of Middle-earth - and realized in the insight of death that the Noldor would never have the strength to crush them; but he cursed the name of Morgoth three times and left his sons a covenant to keep the oath and avenge their father. Then he died; but he has neither grave nor tomb, for his spirit was so fiery that, as soon as he flew away, Feanor’s body became ash and dissipated like smoke; and his likeness never appeared in Arda, nor did his spirit leave the halls of Mandos. Thus ended the life of the greatest of the Noldor, whose deeds brought them great glory and disastrous misfortune.
