one.
Высокий холм за городом стоял,
The tall hill outside the city stood,
Зловещим черным лесом окружён.
The ominous black forest is surrounded.
Две сотни лет шептался млад и стар,
For two hundred years, a young and old whispered,
Об ужасе, что скрыл зеленый склон.
About the horror that hid the green slope.
Детей пропавших так и не нашли,
They never found the missing children,
А с пастбищ пропадал домашний скот.
And livestock disappeared from pastures.
И стороною стали обходить
And they began to bypass
Тот холм, как будто дьявол там живёт.
That hill, as if the devil lives there.


Однажды в Эйлсберри всех всполошил
Once in Ailsberry he knocked everyone
Трясущийся от страха почтальон.
The postman shaking with fear.
Словам его поверить не спешил
I was in no hurry to believe him
Никто, решив что спьяну спятил он:
No one, deciding that he was sleeping with a drunk:
Ведь в дрожь бросало от его речей,
After all, trembling threw from his speeches,
Что холм сожрал деревню и людей!
That the hill has gobbled up the village and people!

Меж грязных и сырых кирпичных стен
Between dirty and raw brick walls
Трепещущие тени нас вели
Trembling shadows led us
По мостовым, что рассыпались в тлен
On the pavements that scattered into the overwhelming
К толпе визжащей медленно мы шли.
We slowly walked to the crowd of screeching.
И пламени плясали языки,
And the tongues danced flames,
И голуби ворчали тут и там,
And the pigeons grumbled here and there,
И в барабаны били бедняки,
And the poor beat the drums,
Молясь своим неведомым богам.
Praying to his unknown gods.


Безумный хор заголосил еще сильней -
The crazy choir broke even stronger -
Я пересёк последнюю черту
I crossed the last line
А в небе стая черных голубей
And in the sky a flock of black pigeons
Взвивалась ввысь, всё дальше в темноту.
I soared upward, farther into the darkness.
Из Запределья тысячи когтей
From an outrage of a thousand claws
В наш хрупкий мир уже несут беду.
In our fragile world they are already boring.

Младенец-Вавилон его не помнил седины,
The baby-vavilon did not remember his gray hair,
Во тьме времен он скрылся от людей,
In darkness, he disappeared from people,
Но разум человечий из безжизненной земли
But human mind from lifeless earth
Поднял его на свет, прах отряхнув с гнилых костей.
He lifted him into the light, shaking her from rotten bones.
Дома, дороги, стены и покои богачей -
Houses, roads, walls and chambers of the rich -
Безумия знак носил каждый узор,
Each pattern wore insanity,
И изваяния неведомых зверей
And sculptures of unknown animals
Насмешливо взирали со своих опор
Mockingly looked from their supports


А в самом сердце града-мертвеца
And in the heart of the Grad Military
Во мрак и холод видели мы ход -
In darkness and cold, we saw a move -
Вниз в подземелье лестница вела,
Low in the dungeon led the staircase,
И в бездне таял каменный пролет.
And in the abyss a stone span was melting.
Но сжалось сердце в ледяной кулак -
But the heart clenched into an ice fist -
Чей это был внизу тяжелый шаг?
Whose was a heavy step below?

Сэт Этвуд, дряхлый фермер, захотел
SET ETVUD, decrepit farmer, wanted
Колодец вырыть у дома во дворе
The well to dug by the house in the yard
Лишь с Эбом он, испачканный в земле,
Only with the eb he, stained in the ground,
Копал весь день, ругался и кряхтел.
I dug all day, cursed and grunted.
Смеялись мы над глупыми людьми
We laughed at stupid people
Одумайся, старик, а он всё рыл.
Take care, old man, and he dug everything.
Потом в психушку Эба он отвёз
Then he took the Eba to the psychiatric hospital
И поздно ночью вены себе вскрыл.
And late at night the veins opened himself.


К колодцу после похорон пришел народ -
After the funeral, the people came to the well -
А старый дед его замуровал
And the old grandfather walked him
Мы разобрали кладку кирпичей -
We dismantled the masonry of bricks -
Но дна никто из нас не увидал.
But none of us saw the bottom.
Кидали камень мерять глубину,
Threw a stone to measure the depth,
Но слышали глухую тишину!
But they heard dull silence!
