Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalacqua, better known as Joe Pass, was born on January 13, 1929, a magnificent American guitarist of Sicilian origin, whose work constitutes an entire era in the history of jazz. His technique is characterized by a pacing bass, melodic counterpoint during improvisation, the use of many non-standard inversions and chord substitutions - all of which had a huge impact on the re-evaluation of the role of the guitar in a jazz ensemble.

Pass was born in New Jersey. I received my first guitar as a gift for my 9th birthday. The father immediately realized that the child was not easy, and constantly demanded from his son to shoot melodies by ear, play works for other instruments and hone the scales. As a result, at the age of 14, Joseph gave his first concerts. Over time, he began to travel around the country with small jazz groups. Unfortunately, after reaching adulthood, Pass became addicted to drugs, and spent most of the 1950s in near obscurity, struggling with this temptation. After completing a course of rehabilitation, he successfully overcame addiction and seriously engaged in improving his playing skills.

In 1962, the first recordings of Pass were released as a band leader for the Pacific Jazz label. At the same time, he started playing his "signature" Gibson ES-175 guitar and stopped using a pick (it broke very often) - this gave him more opportunities to work with chords. Subsequently, Pass worked with such musicians and vocalists as Niels-Henning Oersted Pedersen, Les McCann, Louis Belson, Frank Sintara, Sarah Vaughn, Oscar Peterson, Count Basie and even Ella Fitzgerald. Especially fruitful was his collaboration with Herb Ellis.

Pass' style was influenced by Django Reinhardt and Charlie Parker. The harmonic and melodic feeling of Pass is simply incredible. Even for a non-specialist it is easy to hear how much his music differs from the music of many other guitarists. In terms of virtuosity, he was compared to Paganini, and was also called the greatest guitarist since Wes Montgomery. In addition to performing music, Pass wrote tutorials on learning to play the guitar.
