It is believed that the entire universe is concluded in the five syllables of this mantra.

The word "namam" (नमः) denotes a limited human soul (jiva, जिव). The word "shiva" (शिव) denotes the world spirit (paramatman). The end of "ya" (य) indicates the identity of Jiva and Paramatman. The syllable OM (ॐ) symbolizes the destruction of Maya - illusions.

Although it has a direct translation-worship of good-its main meaning is not in the words, but in the sounds that make up it, which, in turn, are associated with five first elements (earth, water, fire, air and Akasha) and Hypostasyu Shiva - Panchamukha or Panchanana ([possessing] five faces).

“Nama Shivayy” has such power that even a simple pronunciation of these syllables will certainly play a role in the salvation of the soul from the bonds of the treacherous instinctive mind and steel shackles of sophisticated external intelligence. “Numa Shivai” curbs instinct, tears the steel shackles and unfolds this intelligence inside and himself so that he can look at himself and see his ignorance. The wise proclaim that the mantra is life, the mantra is an action, the mantra is love, and the repetition of a mantra, japa, produces the effect of an explosion of wisdom from the inside.
