На Урале веков слишком много назад.
In the Urals of centuries, too much ago.
Меж собой великаны дружили.
The giants were friends among themselves.


Был, как лиственница, Полюд строен, высок,
Was like a larch, the pole is built, high,
И мог дерево вырвать он с корнем.
And he could pull the tree with the root.
Хоть пониже Ветлан, но в плечах он широк,
At least lower by Vetlan, but in the shoulders it is wide,
Был могучим, как кедр, но проворным.
He was powerful as a cedar, but agile.


И великою силой любой обладал:
And with a great power, it possessed:
Взявши камень в могучие горсти,
Having taken the stone into the mighty handfuls,
Размахнувшись, его далеко он кидал
Swinging, he threw him far
И летел камень многие вёрсты.
And the stone flew many in the bits.


Протекли чередой, друг за другом, года,
We leaked a series, one after another, years,
И Полюда, и друга Ветлана
Both the pole and friend of Vetlan
Посетила однажды лихая беда.
Once a dashing trouble visited.
Повстречалась нежданно-незванно
I met unexpectedly, unexpectedly


Им красавица, что, как берёзка, стройна.
It is a beauty that, like a birch, is slim.
Сердце каждого витязя сжалось -
The heart of each knight clenched -
И друзьям полюбилась мгновенно она.
And she fell in love with friends instantly.
Дева Вишерою называлась.
Virgin Vishera was called.


Очи-звёзды, а голос журчит, как ручей.
Eye-stars, and the voice murmures like a stream.
Стать женою Полюд предлагает,
The pole suggests becoming a wife,
И Ветлан, вслед за ним, то же самое ей,
And Vetlan, after him, the same thing to her,
Глядя в очи её, повторяет.
Looking at her eyes, he repeats.


Кто милей, не смогла она сразу решить –
Who was mile, she could not immediately solve -
И друзья в битве страшной схватились:
And friends in the battle of terrible grabbed:
Каждый жаждал другого в бою победить,
Everyone longed for the other in battle to win,
Шесть ночей и шесть дней они бились.
Six nights and six days they fought.


Умоляла их Вишера кончить добром,
I begged them Visher to finish good,
Но бойцы её просьбам не вняли.
But the fighters did not heed her requests.
Лес в округе стонал, грохотал в горах гром –
The forest in the district moaned, thunder rumbled in the mountains -
Это камни два друга метали.
These are stones two friends threw.


На седьмой день бойцы лишены были сил,
On the seventh day, the soldiers were deprived of the strength,
И из ран струи крови пролились.
And from the wounds a jet of blood spilled.
Где в последний момент богатырь каждый был,
Where at the last moment the hero was everyone,
Там они в останцы превратились.
There they turned into the remains.


Только Вишера их пережить не смогла:
Only Vishera could not survive them:
С белым светом она попрощалась,
With white light, she said goodbye
Быстрой реченькой между друзей потекла,
Fast river between friends flowed,
А вода слезой чистой осталась...
And the water remained clean with a tear ...
