Dark Lady Sylvanas Windrunner experienced the full extent of the Lich King's cruelty. During the Third War, the death knight Arthas invaded Sylvanas's homeland of Quel'Thalas with a Scourge army to use the power of the Sunwell to bring the fallen necromancer Kel'Thuzad back to life. The commander-in-chief of the rangers of Silvermoon, Sylvanas bravely fought against the hordes of the Scourge, but Arthas defeated her and, not wanting to give the elf a quick death, separated her spirit from her body. Turning Sylvanas's spirit into a banshee, Arthas forced her to help the Scourge desecrate Quel'Thalas and exterminate the kingdom's inhabitants.

After Illidan Stormrage attacked the Frozen Throne, Sylvanas was freed. As the rift in the throne opened, the Lich King lost some of his control over the Scourge army. Freed from the Dark Lord's power, Sylvanas regained her body and began plotting revenge. A group of loyal banshees lured Arthas into a trap, and Sylvanas almost succeeded in achieving her goal: during the attack, she paralyzed her mortal enemy with a poisoned arrow, but Kel'Thuzad's intervention saved Arthas. Immediately after the failed assassination attempt, the death knight traveled to Northrend and allied himself with the Lich King. Meanwhile, Sylvanas gathered the Forsaken under her banner - undead, free from the power of the Dark Lord - and founded a city under the ruins of Lordaeron, calling it Undercity. Leading the army of the Forsaken, she united with the Horde and began a war against the Scourge. The alliance turned out to be beneficial for everyone: Sylvanas' relatively small and weak army needed a strong ally, and the Horde lacked an outpost in the Eastern Kingdoms.
