В этом шутливом произведении три героя: Рассказчик, Герр Шлендриан, немецкий бюргер, борющийся против увлечения дочери Лизхен кофейным напитком, и, собственно, сама девушка. Он угрожает пирогами, и блинами, и сушёными грибами домашним арестом, ограничением карманных денег, гардероба и даже запрещает выглядывать на улицу из окна.

There are three heroes in this playful work: the narrator, Herr Schledrian, the German burgher, fighting against the passion of the daughter of Lizhen with a coffee drink, and, in fact, the girl herself. He threatens with pies, pancakes, and dried mushrooms with house arrest, restriction of pocket money, wardrobe and even forbids to look out of the window.

Более того, она уверена, что если трижды в день ей не будет позволено выпить по маленькой чашечке кофе, то она станет похожа на кусочек жареного мяса.

Moreover, she is sure that if she is not allowed to drink a small cup of coffee three times a day, she will look like a piece of fried meat.

Лизхен принимает единственно верное решение выйти замуж только за того мужчину, который позволит ей беспрепятственно варить кофе. Это даже должно быть зафиксировано в брачном контракте (заметьте, уже в ХVIII веке):
