"Варвары!"... Вздрогнул седой Ватикан,
"Barbaras!" ... started a gray -haired vatican,
Тяжесть мечей и задумчивых взглядов
Severity of swords and thoughtful views
Боли не знают, не чувствуют ран,
They don’t know pain, they don't feel wounds,
Не понимают, что значит: преграда.
They do not understand what it means: obstacle.
Город ли, крепость, стена ли, скала,
Lee, fortress, a wall, a rock, a rock,
Что бы ни стало - едино разрушат!
No matter what - one will be destroyed!
И византийских церквей купола
And the Byzantine churches of the dome
Молят спасти христианские души.
The Christian souls pray to save.
Но и сам бог что-то бледен с лица:

К окаменевшим от ужаса стенам.

"Вар-ва-ры!" - в хрип переходит крик,
"Var-va!" - A scream passes into wheezing,
Фыркает кровь из груди часового.
Blood sniffs from the chest of the sentry.
Всадник к растрепанной гриве приник,
The rider to the disheveled mane,
Вслед ему - грохот тяжелого слова...
After him - the roar of a heavy word ...
...Быль или небыль о предках гласит -
... the past or the fiber of the ancestors reads -
Ждет лишь потомков пытливого взгляда,
Waiting for only descendants of an inquisitive gaze,
Как Святослава порубанный щит

На неприступных вратах Цареграда.
