А было так - приказ комбата краток:

Мы скрылись за сугробами палаток

И поднялись в безоблачную высь.

Шли трое суток. Дал комбат промашку,
We walked for three days. The battalion commander made a mistake,
Он думал, мы управимся за день.
He thought we could do it in a day.
Но кончилась вода, хоть выжми фляжку.
But the water ran out, at least squeeze out the flask.
И банды нет, и вновь длиннее тень.
And the gang is gone, and the shadow is longer again.


А я верю в глаза, которые кричат,
And I believe in eyes that scream
Молящий их и яркий блеск глазниц.
Praying them and the bright shine of their eye sockets.
И я не верю в глаза, которые молчат,
And I don't believe in eyes that are silent
Скрываясь за оградою ресниц.
Hiding behind the fence of eyelashes.


Четвёртый день. Кричит Андрей мне в спину:
Fourth day. Andrey shouts at my back:
"Всё, Серж, прости, я, кажется, устал!"
“That’s it, Serge, I’m sorry, I think I’m tired!”
Но тут раздался выстрел карабина,
But then a carbine shot rang out,
И взводный мой, Андрюха мой упал.
And my platoon commander, Andryukha, fell.
Был кратким бой, они нас одолели.
There was a short battle, they defeated us.
Мы отступили, трупы на руках.
We retreated, corpses in our arms.
Но в небе вертолёты прогудели,
But the helicopters were buzzing in the sky,
И показались звёзды на бортах.
And the stars appeared on the sides.


И я видел глаза, которые кричат,
And I saw eyes that scream
Молящий их и яркий блеск глазниц.
Praying them and the bright shine of their eye sockets.
И я не верю в глаза, которые молчат,
And I don't believe in eyes that are silent
Скрываясь за оградою ресниц.
Hiding behind the fence of eyelashes.


Я буду долго помнить эти лица,
I will remember these faces for a long time,
Мне не забыть теперь уж никогда,
I will never forget now,
Как, покидая красные глазницы,
How, leaving the red eye sockets,
Глаза кричали громкое "ВОДА!"
The eyes screamed a loud “WATER!”
