Part 1


погрязший в старых фолиантах
mired in old folios
он и сам не понимал то, как в висках засеребрилась седина
he himself did not understand how the gray hair turned silver at his temples
что по заверениям местных дам была мила и элегантна
which, according to the assurances of the local ladies, was sweet and elegant
да и видна лишь в свете ламп
and visible only in the light of the lamps


он у камина коротал года в надежде
he whiled away the years by the fireplace in the hope
что к любимой вскоре сможет он припасть губам
that he would soon be able to press his lips to his beloved
но некому лекарство дать, а те, что
but there was no one to give medicine to, and those who
за бокал вина из погреба раздвинут ноги
spread their legs for a glass of wine from the cellar
не нужны, совсем, хоть и одна его детей ждёт
were not needed at all, even though one of his children was waiting


но раз под бой часов был потревожен шёлковых блеск штор
but once, under the chimes of the clock, the shine of the silk curtains was disturbed
он отложил Платона, вытер лоб платком и робко распахнул окно
he put Plato aside, wiped his forehead with a handkerchief and timidly opened the window
там Ворон, не поведший даже чёрным оком, гордо с помпой
there the Raven, who did not even move his black eye, proudly and pompously
сел напротив, оценил надменным взором
sat opposite, assessed with an arrogant gaze


хозяина чертогов, тот с ознобом, комом в горле
the master of the chambers, he with a chill, a lump in his throat
вопрошал, "свою Ленор увижу ли я скоро?"
asked, "will I see my Lenore soon?"
Ворон, рот открыв, словно то сон был,
The raven, mouth open, as if it were a dream,

ты вспоминай грехи свои, раз он обиду затаил
remember your sins, since he harbored a grudge
чаща допита за двоих
the thicket has drunk enough for two
Ворон устраивает пир из глаз твоих, но ты смотри
The raven makes a feast of your eyes, but you look


как он спесиво щеголяет пред тобой в иссиня-чёрном фраке
how he arrogantly flaunts before you in a blue-black tailcoat
важностью превосходящий палачей, ведущих заключенных к плахе
surpassing the importance of the executioners leading prisoners to the chopping block
он смотрит на тебя высокомерно
he looks at you arrogantly
взглядом одним на людской род жить обречёт их в страхе
with one glance at the human race he will doom them to live in fear


и он во всей красе тут
and he is here in all his glory
ведет с тобой немногословную беседу
conducting a laconic conversation with you
на его лаконичность ты не сетуй
don't complain about his laconicism
у него есть ответ на каждый твой вопрос
he has an answer to every question of yours
но вот вопрос:
but here is the question:
а так ли ты готов к ответу?
are you really ready for an answer?


он в полуночный час без спроса отворит створки окон
he will open the window sashes at midnight without asking
рассмотрит комнату бездонным зорким оком
examine the room with a bottomless, keen eye
расправит полы фрака, и удовлетворенный твоим взглядом полным страха
straighten the tails of his tailcoat, and, satisfied with your look full of fear
насмешливо повторит твой протяжный долгий вопль
mockingly repeat your drawn-out, long cry
