One day, Thomas Fischer was digging through the material prepared for the new Triptykon album and found interesting things: unused blanks for the legendary "To Mega Therion". But surprise and excitement gave way to thoughtfulness. “Hmm, what should I do with this nonsense now?” thought Fischer. As a result, Tom did not have any desire to tinker with the release of an unreleased rarity, and such material was not suitable for Triptykon, so the musician did not bother and gave it to his Norwegian kents from Darkthrone. This is how "Arctic Thunder" was born.

In general, dear listener, what you just read is a joke, but we all remember there is some truth. The members of Darkthrone have never hidden their ardent love for the work of Hellhammer and early Celtic Frost. And how can you hide it when you can hear everything? The album "Total Death" was a tribute to the first wave of black metal. And it even used riffs that appeared on the releases of both of Tom Fisher's mentioned projects. And, of course, a considerable influence of these legendary formations was noticed in various periods of the Norwegians’ creativity, especially starting from the second half of the 90s, when Fenriz and Nocturno began to flirt with black and roll chips. Well, “Arctic Thunder” is downright outright Celtic Frost-worship.

However, this is not the last surprise. If you look at the dynamics of Darkthrone's evolution, then, leaving out the early death metal work, you can observe a fairly smooth transition from classic black metal to an unclassifiable mishmash of black, heavy, speed, Canadian and other metals. "Arctic Thunder" turns out to be a real bomb, exploding the skepticism of the most hypertrophied realists. Darkthrone, albeit a little, remembered their black metal roots.

As should have become clear by now, this is not a triumphant return to the sound of 1992-1995, but there is more black metal on Arctic Thunder than on any other album by the band in the last ten years. Perhaps "The Underground Resistance" can be called an album that differs from the series of its immediate predecessors. But there was a kind of development of the ideas there. On "Arctic Thunder" there is a kind of jump through those albums back to earlier works.

Perhaps "Arctic Thunder" is most similar to the series of releases consisting of "Ravishing Grimness", "Plaguewielder", "Hate Them" and "Sardonic Wrath". The new creation is a kind of return to the sound of that time, only with a more pronounced bias towards the sound of early Celtic Frost. Before us is a kind of Darktron version of “To Mega Therion”. If "Tundra Leech" first of all simply shocks with its sudden blackness, then with "Burial Bliss" characteristic Celtic Frost riffs are used.

The album is recorded in one key, so it’s not easy to single out something special. Not to say that the music is super-driving; on recent releases, the duo released things that were much more outrageous. But the material is strong and attracts with its nostalgic denseness and similarity to the already mentioned group from Switzerland. Well, if you still try to highlight something, then first of all it’s worth remembering “Inbred Vermin”. The most interesting thing about this composition is its second half. It was suddenly written in a completely different key, the melody there turned out to be more gloomy, gloomy than any other on the album. If she weren't so cool, one could blame the authors for violating integrity.

This suggests two conclusions. Firstly, "Arctic Thunder" is an album that truly manages to surprise. Secondly, it is interesting to listen to him (which also follows from the first). So what can we expect from Darkthrone now? Probably known only to the participants themselves. But about all this some other time. In the meantime, we have "Arctic Thunder".
