Cornea [lat. cornea, cornea] - the anterior most convex transparent part of the eyeball, one of the light-refracting media of the eye.

The human cornea occupies approximately 1/16 of the area of the outer shell of the eye. It has the appearance of a convex-concave lens, with the concave part facing backwards. The diameter of the cornea increases slightly from birth to 4 years and from this age is constant. That is, the growth in the size of the eyeball outpaces the age-related change in the diameter of the cornea. This is why small children's eyes appear larger than adults'.

Keratitis [from Greek. keras - horn] - inflammation of the cornea of the eye, manifested mainly by clouding, ulceration, pain and redness of the eye. Lacrimation, photophobia, blepharospasm, decreased transparency and shine of the cornea with subsequent ulceration and the development of severe complications are observed.

Smoking marijuana anesthetizes the cornea in smokers. Decreased sensitivity can result in very strong rubbing pressure on the eyes, leading to corneal damage or keratitis with ulcers and infection.
