не нашли ни капли крови, ни следа

значит, вор прошёл по чёрным уделам

значит, скоро будут новые беды

Когда голодный пёс залаял, вырыв голову вора

из свежей насыпи сырой земли за домом убийцы,
From a fresh embankment of raw land behind the house of the killer,
когда на первый крик сбежалась любопытная свора,
When a curious pack fled to the first cry,
привычный страх сменился гневом на озлобленных лицах
The usual fear was replaced by anger on embittered faces


Всю ночь вздымались языки костра, терзая злодея,
The tongues of the fire rose all night, tormenting the villain,
до крика первых петухов никто не смел шелохнуться,
Before the scream of the first roosters, no one dared to move,
а поутру решили пепел над рекою развеять,
And in the morning they decided to dispel the ash over the river,
чтоб Чёрный больше в их деревню никогда не вернулся
so that black never returned to their village


Молча с берега смотрели селяне,
Silently, the villagers looked from the shore,
как уносит чёрный пепел теченье,
How the black ash carries the flow
но в реке холодной, словно в тумане,
but in the river cold, as if in a fog,
каждый видел лишь своё отраженье
everyone saw only their reflection
