В летний день над белым тротуаром

Фонари висели из бумаги.
Lanterns hung from paper.

A trumpet voice mumbled over the boulevard,
На больших шестах мечтали флаги.
Flags were dreamed on large poles.


Им казалось море близко где-то,
It seemed to them that the sea was close somewhere,
И по ним волна жары бежала,
And a wave of heat ran over them,
Воздух спал, не видя снов как Лета,
The air slept, not dreaming like Lethe,
Всех нас флагов осеняла жалость.
All of us were filled with pity.


Им являлся остов корабельный,
It was the skeleton of a ship,
Черный дым что отлетает нежно,
Black smoke that flies away gently,
И молитва над волной безбрежной
And a prayer over the boundless wave
Корабельной музыки в сочельник.
Ship music on Christmas Eve.


Быстрый взлет на мачту в океане,
Quick take-off to the mast in the ocean,
Шум салютов, крик матросов черных,
The noise of fireworks, the cry of black sailors,
И огромный спуск над якорями
And a huge descent over the anchors
В час паденья тела в ткани скорбной.
At the hour of the body's fall in the fabric of mourning.


Первым блещет флаг над горизонтом
The flag is the first to shine above the horizon
И под вспышки пушек бодро вьется
And under the flash of guns it cheerfully curls
И последним тонет средь обломков
And the last one to drown among the rubble
И еще крылом о воду бьется.
And it also beats its wing on the water.


Как душа. что покидает тело,
Like a soul. what leaves the body
Как любовь моя к Тебе. Ответь!
Like my love for You. Answer!
Сколько раз Ты в летний день хотела
How many times on a summer day did you want
Завернуться в флаг и умереть.
Wrap yourself in a flag and die.
