Доху отряхнув от постельной трухи

И зернышек проса,
And millet grains,
Смотрели с утеса
We looked with a cliff
Спросонья в полночную даль пастухи.
Sleeps in the midnight of the shepherd.
Вдали было поле в снегу и погост,
In the distance there was a field in the snow and a churchyard,
Ограды, надгробья,
Fences, tombstones,
Оглобля в сугробе,
Shafts in a snowdrift,
И небо над кладбищем, полное звезд.
And the sky above the cemetery, full of stars.
А рядом, неведомая перед тем,
And nearby, unknown before
Застенчивей плошки
Sharp the plumps
В оконце сторожки
In the window of the gatehouse
Мерцала звезда по пути в Вифлеем.
The star flickered on the way to Bethlehem.
Она пламенела, как стог, в стороне
She flashed like a stack.
От неба и Бога,
From the sky and God,
Как отблеск поджога,
Like a gleam of arson
Как хутор в огне и пожар на гумне.
Like a farm in fire and a fire on a threshing floor.
Она возвышалась горящей скирдой
She towered with a burning skin
Соломы и сена
Straw and hay
Средь целой вселенной,
Among the whole universe,
Встревоженной этою новой звездой.
Alarmed by this new star.
Растущее зарево рдело над ней
The growing glow dazzed over it
И значило что-то,
And something meant
И три звездочета
And three starships
Спешили на зов небывалых огней.
They hurried to the call of unprecedented lights.
За ними везли на верблюдах дары.
Gifts were brought behind them on camels.
И ослики в сбруе, один малорослей
And donkeys in the harness, one small
Другого, шажками спускались с горы.
Another, steps down from the mountain.
И странным виденьем грядущей поры
And a strange vision of the coming pore
Вставало вдали все пришедшее после.
Everything came in the distance.
Все мысли веков, все мечты, все миры,
All thoughts of centuries, all dreams, all worlds,
Все будущее галерей и музеев,
All the future of galleries and museums,
Все шалости фей, все дела чародеев,
All pranks fairies, all the things of the sorcerers,
Все елки на свете, все сны детворы.
All Christmas trees in the world, all dreams of children.
Весь трепет затепленных свечек, все цепи,
All the thrill of the crushed candles, all chains,
Все великолепье цветной мишуры…
All the magnificent of color tinsel ...
… Все злей и свирепей дул ветер из степи…
... all the evil and whispering the wind from the steppe ...
… Все яблоки, все золотые шары.
... All apples, all golden balls.
Часть пруда скрывали верхушки ольхи,
Part of the pond was hidden by alder's tops,
Но часть было видно отлично отсюда
But the part was perfectly visible from here
Сквозь гнезда грачей и деревьев верхи.
Through the nests of rooks and trees of the top.
Как шли вдоль запруды ослы и верблюды,
How the donkey and camels walked along the dam,
Могли хорошо разглядеть пастухи.
Could see the shepherds well.
— Пойдемте со всеми, поклонимся чуду, —
- Let's go with everyone, worship a miracle, -
Сказали они, запахнув кожухи.
They said, smelling of the casing.
От шарканья по снегу сделалось жарко.
From shuffling in the snow, it became hot.
По яркой поляне листами слюды
On a bright clearing with mica mica
Вели за хибарку босые следы.
The bare tracks were led behind the hibark.
На эти следы, как на пламя огарка,
On these traces, like on the flame of a rod,
Ворчали овчарки при свете звезды.
The shepherds grumbled in the light of the star.
Морозная ночь походила на сказку,
The frosty night was like a fairy tale
И кто-то с навьюженной снежной гряды
And someone with a hunched snowy ridge
Все время незримо входил в их ряды.
All the time invisibly entered their ranks.
Собаки брели, озираясь с опаской,
The dogs wandered, looking around,
И жались к подпаску, и ждали беды.
And they poured to the podparka, and waited for troubles.
По той же дороге чрез эту же местность
On the same road through the same area
Шло несколько ангелов в гуще толпы.
There were several angels in the thick of the crowd.
Незримыми делала их бестелесность,
Invisible made their incorporeality,
Но шаг оставлял отпечаток стопы.
But the step left the footprint.
У камня толпилась орава народу.
The stone crowded a horde of people.
Светало. Означились кедров стволы.
Light. The cedar trunks meant.
— А кто вы такие? – спросила Мария.
- And who are you? - asked Maria.
— Мы племя пастушье и неба послы,
- We are the shepherd and the sky of the ambassadors,
Пришли вознести Вам Обоим хвалы.
They came to bring you both praises.
— Всем вместе нельзя. Подождите у входа.
- Everyone is impossible together. Wait at the entrance.
Средь серой, как пепел, предутренней мглы
In the middle of gray, like ash, more marvelous gloom
Топтались погонщики и овцеводы,
Drovers and sheep farmers stomped,
Ругались со всадниками пешеходы,
Pedestrians cursed with riders,
У выдолбленной водопойной колоды
At a hollowed watering deck
Ревели верблюды, лягались ослы.
The camels roared, the donkeys were lying.
Светало. Рассвет, как пылинки золы,
Light. Dawn, like ash dust,
Последние звезды сметал с небосвода.
The last stars swept off the sky.
И только волхвов из несметного сброда
And only the Magi from a myriad
Впустила Мария в отверстье скалы.
Maria let in in the opening of the cliff.
Он спал, весь сияющий, в яслях из дуба,
He was sleeping, all shining, in a mane from oak,
Как месяца луч в углубленье дупла.
Like a month, a beam in a hollow of hollows.
Ему заменяли овчинную шубу
He was replaced by a sheepskin fur coat
Ослиные губы и ноздри вола.
Donkey lips and nostrils will.
Стояли в тени, словно в сумраке хлева,
They stood in the shade, as if in the gloom of the barn,
Шептались, едва подбирая слова.
They whispered, barely choosing words.
Вдруг кто-то в потемках, немного налево
