Certain men came down from Judea, and taught the brethren, saying, Except ye be circumcised according to the custom of Moses, ye cannot be saved.

Now when there arose a difference of opinion and no small controversy between Paul and Barnabas and them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go to Jerusalem concerning this matter to the apostles and elders.

So being sent forth by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, reporting how the Gentiles had been converted, and causing great joy to all the brethren.

And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church, the apostles, and the elders, and they declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

Then some of the heresy of the Pharisees, who believed, arose, saying, The Gentiles must be circumcised, and commanded to keep the law of Moses.

The apostles and elders assembled to consider this matter.

After much discussion, Peter stood up and said to them, “Men and brethren, you know that God from the earliest days chose me from among us, that the Gentiles might hear the word of the gospel from my mouth and believe.

And God, who knows the hearts, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us.

And He made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Why then do you now tempt God, intending to put a yoke on the necks of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, just as they were.”

Then the whole congregation fell silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

After they had finished speaking, James spoke and said, “Men and brethren, listen to me.” Simon explained how God first looked upon the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His name.

And the words of the prophets agree with this, as it is written:

After this I will return and rebuild the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and I will rebuild its ruins, and I will set it up,

that the rest of men may seek the Lord, and all the nations among whom My name is called, says the Lord who does all these things.

Known to God from eternity are all His works.

Therefore I think not to make it difficult for those from the Gentiles who are turning to God,

but to write to them that they should abstain from things polluted by idols, from fornication, from things strangled, and from blood, and that they should not do to others what they do not want to do to themselves.

For the law of Moses has had those from ancient times preaching it in every city, and is read in the synagogues every Sabbath.

Then the apostles and elders with the whole church decided to choose men from among themselves and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas called Barsabbas and Silas, men who were leaders among the brethren,

writing and delivering to them the following: The apostles and elders and brethren, to the brethren of the Gentiles who are in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greeting.

Forasmuch as we have heard that certain men who went out from us have troubled you with their words and shaken your souls, saying that you must be circumcised and keep the law, which we did not command them,

we have therefore, when we have come together, decided with one accord to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

men who have given up their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore we have sent Judas and Silas, who will explain the same things to you also by word.

For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these necessary things:

that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication, and that you do not do to others what you do not want for yourselves. If you keep these things you will do well. Farewell.

So those who were sent came to Antioch, and having gathered the people together, they delivered the letter.

And when they had read it, they rejoiced at the instruction.

Judas and Silas, being also prophets, exhorted the brethren with many words and strengthened them.

After they had stayed there for some time, they were sent away by the brethren in peace to the apostles.

But Silas decided to remain there. (And Judas returned to Jerusalem.)

Now Paul and Barnabas were living in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, together with many others.

After some time Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go again and visit our brothers in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they are doing.”
