A certain man of the tribe of Levi went and took a wife of Levi.

The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a very beautiful child, she hid him three months.

But when she could not hide him any longer, she took a basket of bulrushes, and pitched it with bitumen and tar, and put the child in it, and set it among the bulrushes by the bank of the river.

And his sister stood afar off to watch what would become of him.

And Pharaoh's daughter went out to the river to wash herself, and her maids were walking by the bank of the river. And she saw the basket among the bulrushes, and sent her maid to fetch it.

And she opened it, and saw the child, and, behold, the child was crying. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrew children.

And his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call you a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?

And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Go down. So the maid went and called the child's mother.

And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child, and nurse him for me; and I will give thee wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed him.

And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he was to her for a son: and she called his name Moses: for, said she, I drew him out of the water.

And it came to pass after many days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren the children of Israel, and saw their hard labour: and he saw an Egyptian smite an Hebrew of his brethren.

And when he looked this way and that, and saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

And he went out the next day, and, behold, two Hebrews strove: and he said unto him that did him wrong, Why smiteest thou thy neighbour?

And he said, Who made you ruler and judge over us? Do you intend to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian? Moses was afraid and said, Surely this matter has been reported.

And Pharaoh heard of this matter and sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian and sat by a well.

Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's sheep.

And the shepherds came and drove them away. Then Moses arose and defended them and watered their sheep.

And they came to Reuel their father, and he said, Why have you come so quickly today?

They said, An Egyptian defended us from the shepherds, and even drew water for us and watered the sheep.

He said to his daughters, Where is he? Why have you left him? call him, and let him eat bread.

And Moses was pleased to live with the man; and he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah.

And she bare a son, and Moses called his name Gershom: for, he said, I have become a stranger in a strange land.

And after a long time, the king of Egypt died. And the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.

And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

And God saw the children of Israel, and God looked upon them.
