Вот камень. Он чёрный и ночью, и днём.
Here's the stone. It is black both at night and during the day.
Улитке морской не сиделось на нём.
The sea snail could not sit on it.
По камню всё время Улитка скользила,
The snail was gliding along the stone all the time,
За морем, за пристанью зорко следила.
She kept a vigilant eye on the sea and the pier.
Пыхтела, сопела она то и дело:
She puffed and snorted every now and then:
Да, море бездонно и мир – без предела,
Yes, the sea is bottomless and the world has no limits,
Доплыть не сумею я так далеко! –
I won't be able to swim that far! –
Она говорила, вздохнув глубоко.
She spoke, taking a deep breath.


А рядом – собранье улиток-подруг,
And next to it is a collection of snail friends,
На камне расселись уютно вокруг.
They sat comfortably around on the stone.
Они беспокойной подружке внушали:
They inspired the restless girlfriend:
Спокойно! Не дёргайся! Ты же большая…
Calmly! Don't move! You're big...
Сопела Улитка, потом завопила:
The snail sniffled, then screamed:
И всё же свои я испробую силы!
And yet I will try my strength!


По камню Улитка опять заскользила,
The snail slithered along the stone again,
И надпись поверхность посеребрила.
And the surface of the inscription was silvered.

Вот Кит. Он однажды поднялся с приливом
Here's Keith. He once rose with the tide
В тот час, когда звёзды висят над заливом.

It seemed that the sea was too crowded for him.
Улитке он спел расчудесную песню
He sang a wonderful song to the snail
О рифах коралловых и ледниках,
About coral reefs and glaciers,
О звёздном дожде и о страшных штормах.
About star rain and terrible storms.


По морю плывёт отражение звёзд.
The reflection of the stars floats across the sea.
Кит подал улитке с почтением хвост
The whale respectfully gave the snail its tail
И так ей сказал: Коль теперь мы вдвоём,
And so he said to her: Since now it’s just the two of us,
Куда захотим - туда поплывём.
Wherever we want, we will sail there.


Вот море.
Here is the sea.
Угрюмо оно и свободно.
It is gloomy and free.
И держит Кита
And holds Keith
С Улиткой на краешке самом хвоста.
With a snail on the very edge of the tail.
Плывут они мимо больших ледников,
They sail past large glaciers,
Вулканов горячих и жёлтых песков.
Volcanoes of hot and yellow sands.


Вот волны, что гнутся и с грохотом бьются,
These are the waves that bend and crash with a roar,
Резвятся и пенятся, даже плюются.
They frolic and foam, even spit.
Улитка сидит на хвосте у Кита.
The snail sits on the whale's tail.


А это пещеры на глубине,
And these are caves at depth,
Что под водою на самом дне,
What's under the water at the very bottom,
И рыбки с плавниками удивительными,
And fish with amazing fins,
И акулы с ухмылками отвратительными
And sharks with disgusting grins
Провожают Кита
Seeing off Keith
С улиткой на краешке самом хвоста.
With a snail on the very edge of the tail.


А это небесный свод,
And this is the vault of heaven,
Что так высоко простёрт.
Which is stretched so high.
Иногда он тёплый и голубой,
Sometimes it's warm and blue,
Иногда серый и штормовой.
Sometimes gray and stormy.
И молний вспышки.
And lightning flashes.
Берегись, мелкота!
Watch out, little one!
Улитка сидит на хвосте у Кита.
The snail sits on the whale's tail.


И смотрит на дали она голубые,
And she looks at the blue distances,
На волны, пещеры, пески золотые.
On the waves, caves, golden sands.
Всё смотрит и смотрит, и вдруг поняла:
She kept looking and looking, and suddenly she realized:
Я знаю теперь, насколько мала!
I know now how small it is!


А после печальный совсем день настал,
And then a very sad day came,
Когда даже Кит в море путь потерял.
When even the Whale lost its way at sea.


По морю моторные лодки носились,
Motor boats rushed across the sea,
И странные звуки кругом разносились.
And strange sounds were heard all around.
От шума в ушах Кит совсем занемог
Keith became completely ill from tinnitus.
И грузно упал на прибрежный песок.
And fell heavily onto the coastal sand.


На мелководье теперь он лежит
Now he lies in shallow water
Очень печален, растерян, разбит.
Very sad, confused, broken.


Ну-ка, вставай, возвратись в океан! -
Come on, get up, go back to the ocean! -
Слышит улитку Кит-великан.
The giant whale hears the snail.
Слишком большой я по суше ходить, -
I'm too big to walk on dry land -
Ей отвечает со стоном Кит.
Keith answers her with a groan.


Ну а Улитка слишком мала,
Well, the snail is too small,
Но в себе силы всё же нашла.
But I still found strength within myself.


Нет, я не сдамся! – и поползла.
No, I won't give up! - and crawled.


Это звонок, он зовёт на урок.
This is the bell, he calls for class.
Это учитель, берёт он мелок.
This is the teacher, he takes the chalk.
Это доска, что черна словно ночь.
This is a board that is black as night.
Это Улитка, что просит помочь.
This is the Snail asking for help.
Ты серебристую видишь черту?
Do you see the silver line?
Дальше слова: Помогите Киту!
Further words: Help Keith!


Школьники с криками к морю бегут.
Schoolchildren run screaming to the sea.
Следом пожарные воду везут.
Next the firefighters bring water.


Брызнули струи воды холодной.
Jets of cold water splashed.


Снова по морю плывёт Кит свободно!
The whale is swimming freely on the sea again!


Жители все закричали: Ура!
The residents all shouted: Hurray!
Киту и Улитке в дорогу пора.
It's time for the whale and the snail to go.


Вот мимо пристани гордо плывут.
They proudly sail past the pier.
Подруги улитки собрались тут.
The snail's friends have gathered here.
Шепчутся: Целая вечность прошла,
They whisper: An eternity has passed,
Что-то подружка не подросла…
Somehow my girlfriend hasn’t grown up...


Кит и Улитка им рассказали
Whale and Snail told them
Про чудеса и заморские дали,
About miracles and overseas distances,
И про пещеры, и волны большие,
And about caves and big waves,
Про ледники и звёзды морские,
About glaciers and sea stars,
И как Улитка, хрупкая крошка,
And like a snail, a fragile baby,
Своей серебряной маленькой ножкой
With your little silver foot
Киту оказала бесценную помощь.
Kit received invaluable help.


Потом кит хвостом коснулся земли,
Then the whale's tail touched the ground,
Улитки тогда на него заползли.
The snails then crawled onto him.


И пели улитки про дальние страны,
And the snails sang about distant lands,
Плывя на хвосте кита-великана.
Swimming on the tail of a giant whale.
