prologue. In river abodes on rocky reefs
Жил царь драконов старичок - Лун-Ван.
There lived an old king of dragons - Lung-Wan.
О нём ходило много разных мифов,
There were many different myths about him,
И в них он верил часто даже сам.
And he often believed in them even himself.


Он приносил дожди живительные в поле,
He brought life-giving rains to the fields,
Кропил святой росою сакуры сады.
He sprinkled the gardens with holy dew of sakura.
И был с той влагой делать всё он волен,
And he was free to do everything with that moisture,
То засуху нести, то беды от воды.
Either bring drought, or trouble from water.


1. Но вот однажды приключилось горе.
1. But then one day grief happened.
Царь захворал, не знав иной беды.
The king fell ill, knowing no other misfortune.
Он посылал гонцов за лекарями в море,
He sent messengers to the sea for doctors,
Но не было таких, кто жил в краях воды,
But there were no such people who lived at the edges of the water,


Кто мог бы излечить недуг дракона,
Who could cure the dragon's illness,
А свет ему казался весь не мил.
And the light didn’t seem nice to him at all.
И жалом в голову впилась корона -
And the crown dug into my head like a sting -
Царь больше на калеку походил.
The king looked more like a cripple.


2. И вот решил он, обернувшись в старца,
2. And so he decided, turning into an old man,
Искать спасенья у земных людей.
Seek salvation from earthly people.
Достав волшебный посох свой из ларца,
Taking out his magic staff from the casket,
Надев личину, вышел из дверей.
Putting on his disguise, he walked out the door.


И, тут же, по миру бродить пустился,
And, right there, he set out to wander around the world,
Ища целителей и разных знахарей.
Looking for healers and various healers.
Никто не мог помочь, но он богам молился.
No one could help, but he prayed to the gods.
Так прошло немало жутких дней.
So many terrible days passed.


3. Нашёл он все же в мире чудотворца,
3. He nevertheless found a miracle worker in the world,
Тот заподозрил: - Ты не из людей?
He became suspicious: “Are you not one of the people?”
Лун-Ван ответил: - Да, во мне иное сердце,
Long-Wan replied: “Yes, I have a different heart,
Я царь драконий - бог речных ветвей!
I am the dragon king - the god of river branches!


Мудрец сказал: - Яви реальный облик!
The sage said: - Show your real appearance!
Иначе мне причину хвори не узнать…
Otherwise, I won’t know the cause of the illness...
Царь согласился, мучаясь от боли:
The king agreed, suffering from pain:
- Что ж придется вновь драконом стать.
- Well, you'll have to become a dragon again.


4. И в облике своем дракон тогда явился
4. And then the dragon appeared in his form
И лекарь тело бедолаги осмотрел
And the doctor examined the poor fellow's body
Под чешую ехидный паразит забился.
A malicious parasite hid under the scales.
Мудрец там сколопендру рассмотрел.
The sage looked at the centipede there.


Достав ту тварь и рану смазав мазью,
Having taken out that creature and smeared the wound with ointment,
Он отпустил счастливого царя...
He released the happy king...
С тех пор дракон не гневался ни разу,
Since then the dragon has never been angry,
Людей земных дождём благодаря.
Thanks to the people of the earth thanks to the rain.
