Впервые пьеса была поставле 24 декабря 1951 года в оперном театре на студии «NBC 8H» в Рокфеллеровском центре (Нью-Йорк). Опера транслировалась в прямом эфире по телевидению. For the first time, the play was delivered on December 24, 1951 at the Opera Theater at the NBC 8H studio in the Rockefeller Center (New York). The opera was broadcast live on television. According to experts, about five million people watched the opera at that moment. This is the largest audience that has ever watched television operas.
Сюжет достаточно прост. Время действия – начало нашей эры, сразу после рождения Христа. В центре картины – мать и ее сын, Амал. Мальчик может ходить только на костылях. Несмотря на свой недуг, ребенок растет жизнерадостным фантазером, и все время допекает мать своими выдумками. Однажды ночью к ним в дом стучатся Три короля, которые держат путь к божественному сыну. Но сейчас они ищут ночлега. Женщина впускает их. Амал очень любопытен. Он расспрашивает королей об их жизни, о том, что они несут с собой, о том, куда держат путь. Тем временем мать мальчика уличили в краже золота королей. Царский паж бросился на женщину и попытался забрать у нее сокровища, но мальчик кинулся на ее защиту. Короли же решили, что сыну Господнему не нужно золото, чтобы построить свое королевство на земле, и разрешают женщине оставить золото себе. Кроме того, Амал внезапно обнаруживает волшебное исцеление от недуга. The plot is quite simple. The time of action is the beginning of our era, immediately after the birth of Christ. In the center of the picture is a mother and her son, Amal. The boy can only walk on crutches. Despite his ailment, the child is growing a cheerful dreamer, and all the time the mother is at his fiction. One night, three kings are knocking on their house, who keep the way to the divine son. But now they are looking for an overnight stay. The woman lets them in. Amal is very curious. He asks the kings about their life, about what they carry with them, about where they keep the way. Meanwhile, the boy’s mother was convicted of the steal of gold of kings. The royal page rushed at the woman and tried to take her treasures from her, but the boy rushed to her defense. The kings decided that the son of the Lord did not need gold to build his kingdom on earth, and allow the woman to leave gold to herself. In addition, Amal suddenly discovers magical healing from the disease. Then he goes to Christ along with three kings to give him his crutches as a gift (after all, he has nothing more) - as a sign of gratitude for what happened to him a miracle.

Времени на написание оперы катастрофически не хватало, и вот, однажды Менотти увидел триптих Иеронима Босха «Поклонение волхвов» (произведение искусства, состоящее из трёх картин, находилось в музее Метрополитен, Нью-Йорк). Более того, в тот миг он услышал старые колядки о Трех королях, и понял – что это был знак. Тогда композитор принялся за работу над произведением. Многие исполнители получили окончательные отрывки из оперы всего за несколько дней до эфира. Тем не менее, после генеральной репетиции дирижер Артуро Тосканини отметил, что эта опера – лучшее, что когда-либо происходило на телеканале.

There was a catastrophically lacked time to write the opera, and now, once Menotti saw a triptych Jerome Bosch “The Worship of the Magi” (a work of art, consisting of three paintings, was in the Metro, New York Museum). Moreover, at that moment he heard old carols about three kings, and realized that it was a sign. Then the composer set to work on the work. Many performers received final excerpts from the opera just a few days before the broadcast. Nevertheless, after the general rehearsal, conductor Arturo Tuscanini noted that this opera is the best that ever happened on the TV channel.
