The word of the Lord, which came to Jeremiah on the occasion of lack of rain.

Judas is crying, his gates have fallen apart, blackened on the ground, and a cry is rising in Jerusalem.

The nobles send their servants for water; they come to wells and find no water; return with empty vessels; ashamed and embarrassed, they cover their heads.

Since the soil is cracked because there was no rain on the ground, the farmers are confused and cover their heads.

Even a doe gives birth in the field and leaves her children because there is no grass.

And wild asses stand on high places and swallow air, like jackals; their eyes are dim because there is no grass.

Although our iniquities testify against us, yet You, Lord, work with us for Your name’s sake; Our apostasy is great; we have sinned before You.

The Hope of Israel, its Savior in times of trouble! Why are You as a stranger in this land, as a passer-by who came to spend the night?

Why are You as an astonished man, as a strong man, not having the power to save? And yet You, Lord, are among us, and Your name is called upon us; don't leave us.

Thus says the Lord to this people: because they love to wander and do not restrain their feet, therefore the Lord is not pleased with them, now He remembers their iniquities and punishes their sins.

And the Lord said to me: Do not pray for this people for their good.

If they fast, I will not hear their cry; and if they offer a burnt offering and a gift, I will not accept them; but with sword and famine and pestilence I will destroy them.

Then I said: Lord God! Behold, the prophets say to them: You will not see the sword, and you will not have hunger, but I will give you permanent peace in this place.

And the Lord said to me: The prophets prophesy falsely in my name; I did not send them, nor command them, nor speak to them; they tell you false visions and fortune-telling, and empty things and the dreams of their hearts.

Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets: They prophesy in My name, but I did not send them; they say: there will be no sword and famine in this land: these prophets will be destroyed by sword and famine,

and the people to whom they prophesy will be scattered through the streets of Jerusalem from famine and sword, and there will be no one to bury them, they and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters; and I will pour out their evil upon them.

And tell them this word: let tears flow from my eyes night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin, the daughter of my people, was struck with a great slaughter, with a grievous blow.

I go out onto the field, and behold, they are killed with the sword; I enter the city, and behold, they are melting away from hunger; even the prophet and the priest wander the earth unconsciously.

Did You completely reject Judas? Is Zion disgusting to your soul? Why did he strike us so that there is no healing for us? We are waiting for peace, and there is nothing good; We are waiting for the time of healing, and here are the horrors.

We recognize, Lord, our wickedness, the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against You.

Do not reject us for Thy name's sake; Do not degrade the throne of Your glory: remember, do not destroy Your covenant with us.

Are there any among the vain gods of the pagans who make rain? or can the sky itself give a shower? Is it not You, O Lord our God? We trust in You; for You create all these things.
