Когда и впрямь (как знаем из «Кратила»)
When indeed (as we know from "Tarand")
Прообраз вещи — наименованье,
The prototype of the thing is the name,
То роза спит уже в её названьи,
Then Rosa is already sleeping in her name,
Как в слове «Нил» струятся воды Нила.
As in the word "Neil" flow the water of the Nile.


Но имя есть, чьим гласным и согласным
But there is a name whose vowel and agree
Доверено быть тайнописью Бога,
Entrusted to be a secret painting of God,
И мощь Его покоится глубоко
And his power rests deeply
В том начертанье — точном и ужасном.
In that drawing - accurate and terrible.


Адам и звезды знали в кущах рая
Adam and the stars knew in the pieces of paradise
То имя, что налетом ржави
The name that rust
Грех (по учению Каббалы), из яви
Sin (according to the teachings of Kabbalah), from Yavi
И памяти людей его стирая.
And erasing his memory.


Но мир живёт уловками людскими
But the world lives with tricks of human
С их простодушьем. И народ Завета,
With their simple -mindedness. And the people of the covenant,
Как знаем, даже заключенный в гетто,
As we know, even enclosed in a ghetto,
Отыскивал развеянное имя.
He looked for a scattered name.


И не о мучимых слепой гордыней
And not about tormented by blind pride
Прокрасться тенью в смутные анналы —

Желая знать скрываемое Богом,
Wanting to know the hidden by God,
Он занялся бессменным испытаньем

Букв и, приглядываясь к сочетаньям,
Letters and, looking at the combinations,
Сложил то Имя, бывшее Чертогом,
Fold the name, the former devil,


Ключами и Вратами — всем на свете,
Keys and gates - everyone in the world,
Шепча его над куклой бессловестной,
Whispering him over the doll deceased,
Что сотворил, дабы открыть из бездны
That I created in order to open from the abyss
Письмен, Просторов и Тысячелетий.
Writings, open spaces and millennia.


А созданный глядел на окруженье,
And the created looked at the encirclement,
С трудом разъяв дремотные ресницы,
Having hardly pulled off the dormant eyelashes,
И не поняв, что под рукой теснится,
And not understanding what is crowded at hand,
Неловко сделал первое движенье.
He awkwardly made the first movement.


Но (как и всякий) он попался в сети
But (like anyone) he got into the network
Слов, чтобы в них плутать всё безысходней:
Words in order to plow everything with hopelessness in them:
«Потом» и «Прежде», «Завтра» и «Сегодня»
“Then” and “before”, “tomorrow” and “today”
«Я», «Ты», «Налево», «Вправо», «Те» и «Эти»
“I”, “you”, “left”, “right”, “those” and “these”

That the cat rabbi whipped into a safe

But I see him through the years clearly.)


К Отцу вздымая руки исступлённо,
Rushing his hands to his father frantically,
Отцовской веры набожною тенью

He put in dumb, funny admiration
Нижайшие восточные поклоны.
The lowest oriental bow.


Творец с испугом и любовью разом
Creator with fright and love at once
Смотрел. И проносилось у раввина:
Watched. And the rabbi flashed:
«Как я сумел зачать такого сына,
“How I managed to conceive such a son,
Беспомощности обрекая разум?
Helpical reason dooming the mind?


Зачем к цепи, не знавшей о пределе,
Why to a chain that did not know about the limit,
Прибавил символ? Для чего беспечность
Added a symbol? Why carelessness
Дала мотку, чью нить расправит вечность,
Gave a skein, whose thread will straighten the eternity,

In the wrong light of the temple of deserted
